Beschreibung
Following Leipzig 2005 and L’Aquila 2007, the book continues a series of Conference Proceedings which combine recent research results on the hot topic of diffusion, i.e. the irregular particle movement, with the charm and beauty of the conference venue. In 2009, the worldwide community of diffusion researchers met in Athens. Known as the city of the goddess of wisdom, Athens is particularly suited for simultaneously celebrating the 600th anniversary of Leipzig University where this conference series has started. Following the tradition, the book is graced with 25 paintings of Athens’ landmarks by the Japanese physicist and artist Taro Ito.

Together with Athens’ most prominent building, the Acropolis, the front page provides an impression of the huge spectrum of diffusion phenomena which range from the development of concentration profiles in tiny porous crystals to the spreading of diseases via air connections. Introduced with a story about the “Heroes and Highlights in the History of Diffusion”, the book contains chapters on
“Diffusion in Social Sciences”,
“Diffusion in Polymers”,
“Diffusion in Nanoporous Materials”,
“Diffusion in Nanostructured Solids”,
“Dynamics of Systems with Rugged Energy Surfaces”,
“Diffusion in Living Cells and Tissues” and
“Multiscale Simulations”.
