Jaqueline Berndt

Jaqueline Berndt is Full Professor in Comics Theory at Kyoto Seika University, Japan. After receiving her Ph.D. (in Aesthetics) from Humboldt-University Berlin in 1991, she went to Japan, where she has been teaching courses on art theory and visual culture in Japanese in university departments of sociology and media studies since then. Her research interests include aesthetics of comics, animation studies, and art sociology, with a special focus on manga and anime in relation to globalization, gender-specific media, visual culture, and the institution of modern art in Japan. Jaqueline Berndt authored the first comprehensive monograph on manga in German and served as editor for collected volumes in Japanese, English and German.
